The Simple, Accurate Way to Measure a Commercial Fishing Net

The following information is backed by the Constitution, Our 1st Supreme Court Case, and ALL FWC Rules.

I've received several calls lately from fishermen that are confused as to how to measure seine and "other rectangular nets" according to the constitution and FWC rule.

Measuring a net can be confusing if you're counting meshes, but let me simplify it. I've discovered that many fishermen are cheating themselves out of a significant portion of legal net... And as small as they are, every inch helps.

At this moment, the largest mesh (or hole size) fishermen are allowed by the FWC is "two inch stretch mesh" or "1 inch open mesh." (1 inch square holes)

If you hang in the net with open mesh at 6 or 7 meshes per 6 inch tie (For a diagram of a 6 inch tie, see below, though the FWC allows a maximum of 7 meshes per 6 inch tie), you simply figure your "stretch mesh" in depth from the top of the corkline mesh to the bottom of the leadline mesh and divide that figure in half.

You then take that "half" number and divide it into 500. The end result will be the length of your Corkline. That's all! You now know exactly how long and deep a "500 square foot of mesh area net" is!

Example: This is 6 "open meshes" "hung in" on the 6 inch tie.

Lets say you have a 2" stretch mesh net (1 inch open mesh net), hung on the half. (Shown above) The stretch mesh DEPTH of the net will be (6) two inch stretch meshes per stretch foot. IF the net stretches to a depth of 10 feet... 1/2 of 10 feet will be 5 feet. (This is your "open mesh" measurement) Take the 5 feet and divide it into 500. That will equal the length of your corkline... 5/500= 100 feet.

Note: There will be 60 stretched 2" meshes per 10 feet in stretch mesh depth. (60 x 2 = 120 divide by 12 inches = 10 feet.)
